“Symvolo” Christian Fish Symbol

In this whole session of “Symvolo” I will post about Symbols (Symvolo) that are used in the Church.
Let’s see what we mean when we say symbol. As most of you have probably guessed, the word symbol comes from the Greek word σύμβολον from the root words

συν-, meaning “together,” and βολή, “a throw”.

Thus, symbol has the approximate meaning of “to throw together”. So two things are brought together, first something that is real and second something that represents that which is real.

The Ancient Christians abounds with the use of symbols. These symbols are those realities which have the power and competence of manifesting God to men, signs which carry us beyond ourselves and themselves into the genuine union and knowledge of things eternal and divine. Symbols and signs of the Church serve as important and powerful tools for educating newly converted Christians. Sign which made Peter think about Gentiles, Sign which protected the believers during persecution, Sign which made Emperor Constantine a believer.

Signs from/of God have always been a part of Christian live.

Fish Symbol, I-ch-th-y-s

The fish’s first known use as a Christian religious symbol was sometime within the first three centuries AD. Christians began using the Greek word for “fish” as an anagram/acronym for “Jesus Christ God’s Son, Savior”.The fish outline is a logical symbol for the early Christian church to adopt. Not only was fish a common food of the day, it was also used by Jesus during His ministry.

Mark 1:17                   “Come after Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”

Matthew 12:40          “Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

Matthew 14:17          “And they said to Him, ‘We have here only five loaves and two fish.’”

Luke 5:6                     “And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.”

Luke 24:42                 “So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb.”

John 21:6                   “And He said to them, ‘Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.’ So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.”

loaves and fish

In the years following the ascension of the resurrected Jesus to heaven, the Christian church grew rapidly. Christians soon found themselves to be the subjects of persecution by both the Romans and the Jews. In many nations, it became dangerous to be known as a Christian.

Thus, when two strangers met and thought maybe they were fellow believers, one of them would draw, on the ground, the upper half of the fish symbol.

1ST Half

drawing 2nd half fish

Recognizing the symbol, the stranger would add a second curved line and complete the drawing of a fish. It is a very simple shape to draw – just two curved strokes. It could be drawn quickly, and erased just as quickly if there was no sign of recognition on the part of the stranger.

A excavation of 3 ancient christian symbols Fish, Anchor and Chi rho

We do not know whether the story above is true but we do know that the fish’s first known use as a Christian religious symbol was sometime within the first three centuries AD. Possibly around the 16th century Christians began using the Greek word ichthys for “fish”. Ichthys is the most commonly used word in the New Testament for fish.

A Church roof with Fish design

Ichthys consists of five letters from the Greek alphabet: I-ch-th-y-s. When these five letters are used as initials for five words, we obtain this Christian Declaration: Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter. This is an acrostic for ‘Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior.’

IXQUS —– Ichthys —– Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior

I           Iota                 the first letter in the Greek word Iesous                   Jesus

X          Chi                   the first letter in the Greek word Christos                Christ

Q         Theta               the first letter in the Greek word Theos                    Of God

U          Upsilon           the first letter in the Greek word Yios (Huois)          Son

S          Sigma              the first letter in the Greek word Soter                      Savior

Greek meaning                                   Iesous Christos Theos Yios Soter

Alpha symbol

The Greek symbol for Alpha, the first letter of the Greek alphabet, looks very much like the fish symbol.

Rev 22:13 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

Rev 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.

  • Messiah… Son of God

Micheal: I was coming to the same, why he is believed to be the Messiah, the son of God?

Lets do a small analysis, I will show you a content and you have to tell me whom is it talking about and from where this text has been taken?

(Since Micheal knew that the class have students from different communities he showed below verse on the projector)

“He was pireced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed………..”

Micheal: So Friend , tell whom is it talking about and from where this text has been taken?

. Stella, you say first?

Stella: Its Jesus ! and its from New Testament

Reema: Yeah Its Jesus ! I think from New Testament

Rohit and Shah: Of course its Jesus …….and its from New Testament of course

Micheal: Guys, THIS IS NOT FROM NEW TESTAMENT, it’s from the Hebrew bible, book of Isaiah 53 it was written 8 centuries before Christ was born. And as you all said, ITS ABOUT JESUS.

Whole class: Wow!!!!!

isaiah-icon

Micheal: I know you had really had a hard time to believe this because if you read this passage without any kind of pre assumption or biased you will say its JESUS.

Micheal: One of the points which proves Jesus Christ to be the promised Messiah is the OT prophesies.

In the Old Testament there are prophesies fulfilling uniquely in Christ. These prophesies are once and all fulfilled in Jesus.

  • His birth in Bethelehm is one of those prohesise
  • His role as the suffering servant in Isaiah 53 is one those prohesise
  • His entrance into Jerusalem on a donkey is one those prophesise from Zechariah chapter 9.

These are clear evidence that Jesus is fulfilling the OT .

Shah: Can you share a prophesy?

Micheal: Yes sure, The amazing part of prophesy of Isaiah is chapter 9.
“For to us a Child is born. To us a son is given. And government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called wonderful counselor, Mighty God and everlasting Father.”

And the idea of this verse is the messiah will be BORNED…! PHYSICALLY BORNED! His name shall be called wonderful councellor , he is God and Father. Ultimately he is Creator of universe, he is creator of Time.

The chance of any human being to fulfill these prophesy would be one change in the trillion, trillion trillion…………. Seems Mathematically virtually impossible .

Dr Stephen: How many prophecy are there, Michael.

Micheal: The exact number is still a part of debate but all Christian scholars agree that its more than 300 prophecies.

Micheal: These prophesies , in fact whole Old testament is like a puzzle , where you are joining every bit of piece and at the end its coming out to a portrait of Christ.

In projector Michael showed them a picture puzzle which finally made a picture of Jesus.

Epiphany: The Icon of Baptism of our Lord

theophany

Shalom…………

Today according to the Indian Orthodox liturgical calender we celebrate the Feast of baptism of our Lord. Below I will try to explain one of Holy Icon of Baptism of our Lord.

“And straight coming up out of water, he saw the heavens opened and spirit like a dove descending upon him: and there came a voice from heaven, saying , thou art my beloved son, in whom I am pleased” Mark 1:10,11

Icons of Baptism of the Lord are an exact reproduction of the Gospel testimony, with the addition of detail corresponding to the divine service of the day in Orthodox Churches, for instance angels and allegorical figures at the feet of the Savior. The festival of baptism is alos called Epiphany, since Baptism is the manifestation of the Divinty of Christ, when he openly begins his Service to redeem the World.
“It is not the day when Christ was born that should be called Epiphany, but the day when He was baptized” St John Chrysostom, ” not through his birth did He become known to all, but through His baptism.

The Baptism of Christ has two fundamental aspects: on this day, the truth of God in three person was revealed to men. “God, the Trinity, has this day revealed Himself to us indivisibly; for the Father bore witness to his Parenthood with manifest testimony, the spirit descended from heaven like a Dove, and Son bowed His most pure head to the forerunner and was Baptised….”

Holy Trinity: The Mystery of the Three person in one Godhead, which is beyond all understanding, was here made manifest not spiritually but plainly, in sensory forms. John the forerunner heard the voice of the Father and saw the Holy spirit in the form of Dove , confirming this voice- both of them testify to the appearance among men of the son of God in the person of Baptised. He establishes the New Testament sacrament of Baptism.

Heaven: In Accordance with the Gospel text cited above, in the upper part of the Icon there is a segment of a circle symbolizing the opening Heavens, which adam and eve had closed for them and their descendants, just as he had closed the Garden of eden by the flaing sword. Thus part seems like a sword of light descending on Son. Unfortunately this most important detail is not there in our Icon. In general it is depicted in the same manner as in Nativity of Christ.

Dove:The holy Father of the Church explains the appearance of the Holy Spirit in the Form of a Dove at the Lord’s Baptism by analogy with the Flood : just as then the World was purified of its iniquities by the waters of the flood and the dove brought olive branch into Noah’s ark, announcing the end of the Flood and peace returned upon earth, so too now the Holy spirit comes down in the Form of a dove to announce the remission of sins amd God’s Mercy to the world.
“There an Olive barnch, here the Mercy of our God” St John of Damscus.

Whole body in water and Jordan like a cave :To sanctify the waters for our purification and renewal, He who has taken upon Himself the sins of the world. In Symbolic language of the Icon this is expressed by the fact that savior is represented standing , as it were , against a background of water, as though in a cave. This gives us to understand that not a part of his body, but His whole body is immersed in token of His burial, for baptism signifies the death of the Lord (Col 2:12)

Trembling water :Some creature can be seen moving away from the body of Christ, as pslams 77:16 sings
When the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were afraid; indeed, the deep trembled.
The waters of Jordan cleansing Christ, it is Christ Who cleans the waters. This is why in the bottom of most Theophany Icons, little creatures appear to be fleeing from the feet of Christ. This is a reflection of the words of the Psalmist regarding the Messiah Christ:
“the sea saw and fled, the Jordan turned back” Psalm 114:3

St John the forerunner officiates, his right hand placed on the head of the savior . This sacramental gesture has always been part of the rituals of Baptism. In his left hand he sometimes holds a scroll, the symbol of his preaching or a gesture of prayer. Near to John is a tree with an axe laid at the root, recalling John’s own preaching to those who came to him:
“And now also the ax is laid to the root of the trees: therefore every tree which brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.” (Matt 3:10).

Angels: The Icon represented here is distinguished but the very rhythmic, light , elegant Angel with their cloak welcoming Christ as he comes out of water. The Inclination of figure toward Christ takes all attention of the onlooker.

To prove his resurrection first prove his death(A conversation)

  • His Death

Micheal: Now to prove about resurrection of Christ from Dead, we must first consider his death.
Bible says in, Mathew Chapter 27, How Jesus died.

Dr Stephen:
We know what Bible says about Jesus death, we want some logical proof out of Bible.
Micheal: Yes Doctor, but through this point I will also prove that Bible is true. Crucifixion of Christ is historically proven with the fact the Jews accept this fact and Jews historians like Flavius Josephus include references about Jesus’s Crucifxion. Josephus wrote,
At this time there was a wise man who was called Jesus. And his conduct was good and his learning outstanding. And many people from among the jews and the other nations became his disciple. Pilate condemned him to be crucified and to die………

Shah: But why should we believe in Jew witnesses?

Micheal: Because they were the one who crucified and condemned him to death.

Shah: Was this historian, a religious historian?

Micheal: No, but he wrote the antiquities of Jew under roman empire. His writing are genuine and accepted by the Historians. So his witness about Jesus crucifixion is true.

Rohit: Many skeptics proposed that Jesus merely fainted or drugged and later escaped as a part of a conspiracy ?

Micheal: But contradicting this point the 4 gospels tells us about his public bleeding and death by crucifixion and burial.
Mark 15:37
“And Jesus cried out with Loud voice, and breathed his last”
Lets see what is exactly Crucifixion?
Chances of surviving crucifixion was impossible, crucifixion was a tortured considered to the worst way to die. A person was tortured so intense that the veins, arteries intestine, bones, every single part were barred and after that a person was dragged and were hanged on a cross or tree.

Reema: It doesn’t seems to be real, this kind of story of death is only seen in films like Passion of Christ. You saying it was like that? I don’t believe in it.

Micheal: Actually it was worse than that.

Historically Crucifixion is considered to be the worst form of Death penalty.

  • The Romans were very very good at killing people, they were specialized on it.
  • If a soldier shows any mercy on a victim and if that victim has not died. By law the soldier will take up his place cross.
  • In 18th century historian found a body of a Jew, who was crucified during reign of Emperor Nero. The way he was crucified was exactly the same written in Bible.

Reema: So was it like the same with nails, spears and all? Did they treated the same with all criminals.

Micheal: Not exactly, In Jesus case I would have been worse than that, in Jesus case he was charged by Jews in the case of Blasphemy, which was considered to be the worst crime. So you can imagine how much Jesus was tortured.
The most important verse about his death from the romans is written in
John, 19:34
“But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear and immediately blood and water came out.”
Medical experts says that with this account of john and eye witness is an evidence concluding that his heart was ruptured.
So I hope that, the skeptical claim that Jesus was drugged doent make any sense LOICALLY.

Stella: What makes him to be called as ‘The Messiah’?

Tobe continued…….

Oh! did Jesus really rise from the Dead, Prove it………

Shalom…….

Its a story of how people see the resurrection of Jesus, do they really believe in his resurrection. The very base of Christianity is Resurrection of Christ. If there is no Resurrection then there is no Salvation .

Come lets have look how we can prove that “Jesus is Risen”

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

In a class auditorium of Medicine, a new batch of student are going through the orientation session given by their professor Dr Stephen.

Before concluding his session, Dr Stephen informed students to be beware of things like Miracle and “Jesus things” in their Medicine, saying Science is logical and God is not Logical, there is no scientific proofs of God and no scientific proof for these “Jesus things”.

What do you mean by “Jesus things”? Micheal, a student asked Dr Stephen. Dr replied, his rubbish biblical miracles and of course his so called “Resurrection itself”.

But I am Christian and we believe in his resurrection, Stella, a student replied. So can you prove it logically and scientifically? asked Dr Stephen. Dr Stephen asked, write in a note book “Jesus not Risen” and this will be my first sessional to you and you all will be given grades. All the class including Stella wrote””Jesus not risen”for the sake of grades except Micheal who said, I am true Christian and no matter what you say i believe in his Resurrection. So you will loose your grades Micheal, said Dr Stephen. With a tensed mind but with couregeous heart he replied, I cant betray my Faith in Christ. So Micheal, on the first day itself you are challenging me, Ressurection of Christ is a big lie in the history of Humanity and cant be proven. So i too challenge you, You will get 20 min to prove your point. If a single student turns out and accept your point then I will also support you. Prove it, said Dr Stephen. Micheal faithfully accepted his challenge .

So Micheal stage is yours……………………………….. Micheal setting his stage.

Starting of Micheal’s session

In the history of Human Kind, one the best tolled story is the story of Jesus.

If we consider the whole Bible, Old testament directs toward him, New Testament speaks about.

If we consider the world History , the era itself is named after him as AD and BC.

So the question is why the World gives this much prority to Jesus of Nazareth. Whats specal about him.

All the major religions speaks about him

While Jesus was on earth , he clamied some really radical claims such like the only way we can get to God is only through him. Now if Dr Stephen, with due respect, would have claimed the same thing, we would say he has gone crazy . But a lot of people responded to Jesus the same way. They said , oh really, why dont you show us a sign and proof that you are truly what you claim to be. Jesus said , I will give you one sign , MY RESSURECTION FROM THE DEAD. The Ressurrection of Jesus is really biggest event claimed in History. Anybody can claim to be the Son of God as Jesus clearly did. The question is can you back it up, what evidence is there to support your claim. But If Jesus really return from the dead, thats excellent evidence that he is what he claim to be, the one and only Son of GOD.

  • Now to prove about ressurection of Christ from Dead, we must first consider his death.

Crucifixion of Christ is historically proven with the fact the Jews accept this fact and Jews historians like Flavius Josephus include references about Jesus’s Crucifxion. Josephus wrote,

Faith and Service

Faith and Service

As a Christian we always dispute with the questions what is much greater Faith or Good works or Faithfully doing Good works. I see whoever it may be, every one of us deal with this difficult question. On one side we see non believers but still working for a Good causes and on other side faithful working for the same purpose. Sometime I personally argue with my own self asking, what’s the difference? .

Last week I was just studying about Atheism and I noticed an article on Patheos website, this article was about Mr. Spencer Troxell , an atheist social worker who works at homeless shelter in Ohio. Mr. Spencer explained why he chose this line of work, he says ,

The spirit that led me to my current station was the realization that there was no other Kingdom……………Isn’t it obvious, that if you want yourself and the people you love to be safe and sound and free from want and ignorance , maybe it would be a good idea to make sure our neighbors are safe from as well?……

Initially after reading this I thought , See an Atheist also doing the same, that too without faith in God. But wait …… I reread his whole comment and stopped at many word. I was surprised to see that he was speaking about his inner Spirit, Love , Neighbor’s safety . I found these thoughts little contradicting to Atheism. Actually he was able to judge between Love and hate , safe and unsafe , Good and evil. As C.S Lewis said, A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of Straight line. Bible tell us that , God is Love not God has Love but he itself is Love. Thus in the very act of proving that God doesn’t exist, that is Love doesn’t exist he has unknowingly preached about God, the Love. And it’s this Faith of Love that led him in doing what is good.

Faith and Good/God’s work; Daily we see people judging the truth in terms of Faith and Actions. We see two different kinds of people. One claims, “Good actions are all that matters. The best Good action is charity. The best kind of charity is giving money. The best thing to give money to is the Church. So hand over 1000bucks and Church will see you through. The nonsense about this person is, good actions done with that motive, done with an idea that Heaven can be bought. Second claims, “Faith is all that matters. So if I have full faith in God, its doesn’t matter what I do. It doesn’t matter whether I am doing it Good or evil because Christ will see that it makes no difference in the end. The nonsense about this person is, His faith in Christ doesn’t involve the teaching of Christ, what he meant us to do. This is not a faith at all but just an Hypothesis , an accepted Theory. It same like accepting the theory of realtivity but practicing it in daily life.

Still I was not satisfied because I didn’t came out with an answer to a Question, What exactly is the proportion of Faith and Good works in Christian life, which one is Greater . If we just rethink about the person I mentioned above , who claims to be an atheist. His Good actions were the result of what he feared and cared about the people, it is this fear that brought Love in his heart. And this Love made him do Good works. He had full faith that this Love will accomplish his task, no matter how it will be.

So can we say that this Love is the link between my Faith and my Service? With this Love the both Fith and Service become unmeasurable .May be this Love is so big that we Humans can’t measure the depth or I must say its proportion. May be this Love has no ending or Beginning. May be this Love is Omnipresent, it’s around us without our Knowledge. May be this Love is not biased with anyone making even an atheist to work for Good Cause.
Love is the most powerful thing on universe, we have all seen in our life what it can do and it can do amazing things. Without this Love my faith is dead, without this Love my service is dead.
I can see this Love, as GOD because Love is God and God is Love.

“Prayer in Action is Love , Love in Action is Service”………. Mother Teressa
